Most kids lose about one to two months of math skill over summer break, and reading loss is smaller but still real for kids who don't read at all during the break. You know the feeling. Summer was supposed to be a break, and it was. Then you glance at the calendar and school starts in three weeks, and you're wondering if your kid remembers anything from last spring.
You're not imagining the slide. It's real, it's measured, and it happens to almost every kid. It's also not permanent, and it doesn't take another whole summer to fix. It takes about three focused weeks.

How much learning actually gets lost
Research on summer learning loss has been running for decades, going back to a well-known study by Harris Cooper at Duke University in 1996, and it's been repeated many times since. The general pattern holds: kids lose more math skill than reading skill over the break, and the loss is bigger for skills that rely on practice, like math facts and spelling, than for skills built on understanding, like reading comprehension.
A common estimate is that students lose about one to two months of math computation skill over the summer. Reading loss shows up mostly in kids who don't read at all during break, and it's usually smaller than the math drop.
Here's the part that matters more than the exact numbers: the loss is uneven. It's not that your child forgot the whole year. It's that a handful of specific skills got rusty from lack of use, usually the ones that were newest or shakiest last spring to begin with.

Why math slides more than reading
Reading is everywhere in daily life, on signs, in texts, in game instructions. Kids get low-level reading practice even when they're not trying to.
Math facts don't show up the same way. Nobody's multiplying 7 times 8 while they build a Lego set. Without deliberate practice, math fact fluency fades fast, usually faster than any other school skill.
Spelling and grammar rules behave the same way. They're memorized patterns, not concepts, and memorized patterns fade without use. A kid who understood commas perfectly in May can genuinely forget the rule by August. That's not laziness. That's how memory works for anyone, kid or adult.
How to find out where your child's gap actually is
Guessing wastes time. Before you catch up anything, find out what actually slipped.
Pull out last year's final math test or report card and look for the lowest-scoring unit. That's your starting point, not the whole textbook.
Ask your child to do five multiplication facts, five subtraction problems with regrouping, or read one paragraph aloud and answer two questions about it. Watch where they hesitate. Hesitation is more telling than a wrong answer, it means the skill is there but not automatic yet.
If your child's school uses a program like iReady, STAR, or MAP testing, ask the teacher for last spring's results before the year ends, or the first week's results once school starts. These give you an actual number instead of a guess, and most schools will share them if you ask directly.
You don't need to review a whole grade's worth of material. Most kids have 2 to 4 specific weak spots, not a wall-to-wall gap. Find those spots first, and the catch-up gets a lot shorter.
The 3-week catch-up framework
Here's a plan that works for most kids, in most grades, with about 20 to 30 minutes a day. Start it three weeks before the first day of school.
- Week 1, days 1-2: find the gaps. Do a quick check using last year's tests, or two or three sample problems per subject. Write down the two or three specific skills that need work. Don't test everything, just enough to know where to aim.
- Week 1, days 3-7: rebuild the foundation. Spend 15 to 20 minutes a day on the weakest skill only, not a mix of everything. Repetition on one thing beats a little bit of five things.
- Week 2, days 8-10: add the second gap. Once the first skill feels more automatic, add short daily practice on the second weak spot. Keep the first skill alive with a quick 5-minute review, don't drop it entirely.
- Week 2, days 11-14: mix it up. Start combining skills the way a real test would: a few math problems, a short reading passage, a little of both weak spots together. This is where skills start to feel usable again, not just memorized in isolation.
- Week 3, days 15-19: simulate the real thing. Do short, timed practice sets that look like actual classwork or homework. Ten minutes, not forty. The goal now is speed and confidence, not new learning.
- Week 3, days 20-21: rest and reset. Take the last two days off from formal practice. Talk through what school will look like. Confidence matters as much as skill on day one.
This isn't a rigid script. Some kids need four weeks. Some kids close a gap in ten days. The order matters more than the exact timing: find it, rebuild it, combine it, simulate it, rest.
Cramming all three weeks into the final week before school starts usually backfires. Kids show up exhausted and anxious instead of confident. Start the countdown when there are genuinely three weeks left, not when there's one.
Common mistakes that stall a catch-up
Reviewing everything at once is the most common one. Parents open last year's textbook and start from page one, which overwhelms the child and wastes time on skills that never actually slipped. Target the two or three weak spots you found, not the whole curriculum.
Turning practice into a punishment is another. If catch-up work only happens after a complaint about screen time or a bad attitude, your child starts associating the practice with being in trouble, not with getting ready. Schedule it as a normal, expected part of the day instead, the same way brushing teeth is just part of the day.
Skipping the confidence piece is a quieter mistake. A kid who closes a math gap but still believes "I'm bad at math" will underperform anyway, because that belief affects effort and risk-taking in class. Point out specific wins along the way. "You solved that in half the time it took you last week" does more for confidence than a worksheet full of correct answers ever will.
Waiting too long to start is the last one, and it's the easiest to fix. If there are only five days left before school starts when you read this, don't skip the plan, just compress it. A tight, focused five days on the single biggest gap beats no plan at all.
What the catch-up looks like at different ages
For kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade, focus almost entirely on reading fluency and number sense, counting, basic addition, letter sounds. Keep sessions short, 10 to 15 minutes, and make them feel like games, not lessons.
For 3rd through 5th graders, math fact fluency and multi-step word problems are the usual weak spots, along with reading stamina for longer chapter books. This age group handles the full 3-week framework well.
For middle schoolers, the slide often hits fractions, decimals, and pre-algebra concepts hardest, since these build directly on the previous year with little room for gaps. Writing stamina also drops, kids who haven't written a full paragraph in ten weeks need a warm-up before essay season starts.

How to keep it from feeling like more school
Nobody wants their last free weeks of summer to turn into a second school year. A few ways to keep it light.
Do it first thing in the morning, before the day's fun starts, so it's done and forgotten by lunchtime. Dragging it into the afternoon makes it compete with pool time, and pool time always wins.
Use real materials instead of worksheets when you can. Cooking uses fractions. A road trip uses distance and time math. A library book uses reading comprehension without anyone calling it homework.
Praise effort and progress, not just correct answers. "You got that multiplication fact faster than yesterday" builds more motivation than "good job" ever does.
If the gap turns out to be bigger than three weeks can fix, that's useful information too, not a failure. Some gaps go back further than one summer, and no amount of kitchen-table practice closes a year-old hole in a few weeks. That's when outside help earns its keep.
Catching up more than one kid at once
If you've got two or three kids who all need a summer refresh, running separate sessions for each one eats up your whole morning. A few adjustments make this manageable.
Stagger start times by ten or fifteen minutes instead of running everyone at once. One kid starts while you get the next one set up with an independent task, a flashcard app, a reading log, something that doesn't need you standing over it.
Pair an older sibling with a younger one for the parts that allow it. A 5th grader reading a picture book aloud to a kindergartner practices fluency and expression while the younger one gets story time. Both benefit, and you get fifteen minutes back.
Keep each kid's plan separate even if the schedule overlaps. A 3rd grader and a 7th grader are not working on the same gaps, and mixing their practice into one generic "summer review" wastes time for both of them. Five minutes spent finding each child's specific two or three weak spots saves far more time than it costs.
